Why pixels matter more than characters

Google does not cut titles after a fixed number of characters but when they exceed the available width, about 600 pixels on desktop. A "W" is three times wider than an "i": two 58-character titles can behave in opposite ways.

The simulator measures every text with the same font Google uses and shows in real time where the cut would happen, on desktop and mobile. Everything runs in your browser: nothing is sent to our servers.

On desktop about 580–600 px in 20 px Arial; on mobile the title can wrap to two lines but is still truncated beyond a certain length.
